Manchester Metropolitan University has joined forces with the UK's leading locksmith training college Train Locksmiths to conduct a 3 year-long Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme (KTP). This project is a long-standing, government-funded initiative that allows businesses to improve their performance.
The purpose of this project is to address a specific challenge within the business and work on strategic business solutions to enhance performance within this area.
What does this mean for Train Locksmiths as a training provider?
Train Locksmiths were instrumental in bringing much needed changes and regulation to the locksmith industry, but still believe that further changes are needed to standardise locksmith training and improve the knowledge based or both locksmiths and locksmith training providers
The KTP project will focus on developing the performance of the current state of the art locksmith training centre in Atherton, Greater Manchester, as well as enhancing future training opportunities. The Train Locksmiths training centre will not only be enduring some revolutionary developments over the next few years, but current training abilities will be strengthened immensely due to the addition of the highly qualified tutors - a first for any locksmith training provider.
Scope for the future
This project provides exciting scope for the future of locksmith training, with hopes for a degree being ran through Manchester MET University in the upcoming years - another first for the Locksmith and Security industry.
Thanks to OfQual, Highfield Qualifications, Train Locksmith and Manchester Metropolitan University the locksmith industry is finally getting the overhaul that it has desperately needed.
Regulation and standardisation for the Locksmith Industry
2020 will see a number of welcoming changes in the locksmith industry so look out for upcoming announcements on blogs and social media. For a start the 2 new official OFQUAL regulated qualifications launched a few weeks ago are unlike any others to date, superseding all existing locksmith qualifications and training and creating a minimum standard amongst all professionals.
DBS checks - currently optional in the industry - will become compulsory and any training providers presently offering their own un-official, non OfQual regulated locksmith training courses will have to meet a certain criteria before being able to offer the official courses which will include gaining actual teaching qualifications.
After some initial backlash from a small number of locksmiths, upset about changes to the industry, response has been mainly positive, with independent locksmiths from Derby, Nottingham, Lancaster, Stoke on Trent, Crewe, Bolton and Swinton already signed up to teh new courses.
Train Locksmiths to set up satellite training centres across the country
In a move welcomed by many colleges, universities, OfQual and other government bodies, Train Locksmiths have agreed to set up satellite training centres across the country to help more locksmiths gain the standardised qualification..
Applications are welcome from a wide range of education and training providers.. If you are already an official educational establishment such as a; school, college or university, then Train Locksmiths should be able to add the Ofqual courses to current programmes.
Locksmith training centres currently offering the non OfQual course will be required to gain teaching qualifications first before being considered as a satellite training centre.
